At the end of the 1960s, Steyr Daimler Puch developed the Pinzgauer one-ton off-road vehicle as part of a tender for the Austrian army. However, the first major customer was the Swiss army, which procured a total of approx. 6300 vehicles from 1971 onwards. The 6x6 version accounted for around 1240 of these. This large number resulted from the expansion of the mechanized divisions at the time, when the Swiss militia army had grown to over 800,000 men.

The 6×6 variant had space for 2 men in the cabin and 12 men on the bridge, compared to 8 men in the 4×4 version. Due to the increased payload and the high towing capacity, the 712M was often used as a towing vehicle for anti-aircraft guns, mines or guided missile launchers with an effective range of up to 7000 m.
