The Land Rover 88 and 109 procured by the army were regarded as so-called service motor vehicles.
While over 2000 units of the short model were procured, only around 120 vehicles of the large 109 found their way to the troops. Until its decommissioning in 1995, the large Land Rover remained a rather exclusive vehicle.
At that time, it was customary for vehicles to be offered to motorists at half the purchase price in accordance with a decision by the Federal Council. The purchasers had to undertake a seven-year ownership obligation and make the vehicle available for at least five refresher courses without compensation. Furthermore, the vehicles had to be ensured to be in a condition suitable for military service. As a result, many Land Rovers, Jeeps and even some Unimogs found their way into civilian registration, especially among members of the army who were active in rural areas.
The sale of service motor vehicles was discontinued in 1968. Our model is a 109 Series III. This type was not procured until 1971 and was therefore used exclusively by the army.
