Four-axle trucks were a Swiss phenomenon for a long time. Federal legislation prevented the use of three- and four-axle trucks for a long time. It was not until the amended Road Traffic Act of1973 that the total weight for three-axle vehicles was increased to 25 tons, and that for four-axle vehicles to 28 tons - the same as for trailer combinations. Thus, Saurer and Berna four-axle trucks quickly became a good alternative to trucks with trailers. As a solo vehicle, especially in construction site operation, the D330s were hard to beat. The handiness in combination with the high payload, but also recognized good and environmentally friendly engines, good torque at low speeds, good axle load distribution, torsionally stiff frame; all this also led to a commercial success, which was crowned with over 1,000 units manufactured.
