A Brief History of Henschel: Georg Christian Henschel founded the Henschel foundry in 1785. In 1848, the company began building locomotives, and in 1925, the first Henschel truck was introduced. In 1964, Henschel was acquired by Rheinstahl Hanomag, and the truck brands were merged to form Hanomag Henschel. In 1968, Hanomag Henschel was acquired by Mercedes-Benz—the last Henschel truck was produced in the summer of 1974. From then on, Mercedes axle production was expanded at the former Henschel plant. Henschel Wehrtechnik GmbH was spun off as a separate company.
