A study commissioned by the Swiss Army in the 1960s entitled "Combat in the Mountains" indicated that the motorization of the mountain divisions should be improved. The procurement of 200 all-terrain vehicles for firing BANTAM anti-tank guided missiles was put out to tender. Due to the successful operation in alpine terrain of the previous Army Haflinger, the decision was quickly made in favor of the 700 AP Series 2. The decision was reinforced by the relatively low purchase price and short delivery times.

This was of great importance, as the Swedish company Bofors emerged as the winner of the guided missile evaluation with its Bantam system, and the mounts could be delivered on time. Thus, the weapon system was mounted on the Haflinger in a short time at the Waffenfabrik Bern (RUAG). The system consisted of a powder-operated, wire-guided guided weapon in a launching container and a remote control system and could engage tanks at a range of up to 2 km.

PAL companies and infantry units of the Swiss Army used the Bantam-Haflinger for a good 2 decades.
