Currently, 16 firefighting and rescue platoons are stationed in Switzerland. This is in all regions, so that incident locations are reached within 30 to 60 minutes. The operations are for general firefighting, including in particular fires in the immediate vicinity of railroad installations. The operation is carried out by the crews of the SBB Intervention. However, additional trained firefighters from the militia or professional fire departments may be called upon. In addition to the special SBB fire-fighting and rescue platoons, road vehicles such as the VWT6 are also used.
