The original

On July 19, 1944 a P-51B of the USAAF had to make an emergency landing at Ems GR. The Mustang was requisitioned by the Air Force and entered service as a J-900. After the war the aircraft had to be returned to the USAAF.

In the fall of 1947, 100 P-51D Mustangs were acquired from USAAF surplus stocks. Since the USAF was unable to provide spare parts, the Air Force was awarded another 30 aircraft as spare parts. In 1949, Switzerland was able to procure enough spare parts from stocks that all 130 aircraft could be put into service. In April 1958, the Mustangs were replaced by the Vampires.
