The "bat" is the emblem of the Air Transport Squadron 1, stationed in Payerne. It was created in 1965 and is the only helicopter squadron in western Switzerland. It consists of 18 professional and militia pilots flying Super Puma, Cougar and EC635 helicopters. Their main tasks are air transport for the benefit of the troops of the Armed Forces and the transport of goods on the cargo sling. If necessary, the squadron also supports the civil authorities, e.g. during police operations, in the fight against forest fires or during evacuations due to avalanches, and the border guard during surveillance flights.
Why does the squadron have a bat as its emblem? Its pilots are dexterous both by day and by night, like their namesake animal. Where the bat finds its way with its ultrasonic sounds, squadron members can rely on their helicopters' night vision and navigation equipment. For this reason, LT 1 chose this nocturnal animal for its logo.
