While still a student, 22-year-old Swiss Max Seelaus dared to contact BMW and present the project for his final thesis in car body and vehicle construction at the master craftsman school in Kaiserslautern. There, the Zrcher met with a positive response.
The Bavarian company had a niche in its model range that needed to be filled by a sports coup. Seelaus and his seven-person team were provided with a complete chassis and drive unit. The result was a vehicle in 1965 that still inspires today with its breathtaking design.
Seelaus' goal was to be able to produce the car in Switzerland. But his hopes were dashed when BMW took over Glas, another Bavarian carmaker, shortly afterwards and this collaboration resulted in the BMW 1600 GT from its own ranks.
Thus, the BMW Hurrican remained a single piece, obtained the road registration at the MFK Zrich, but was driven relatively little in all these years. The vehicle is privately owned and can currently be viewed at the magnificent Oldtimerforum Pantheon in Muttenz/BL.
